He returned
to shell-BP in January 1974, and resigned in February 1974 to join
the Nigerian National Oil Corporation in May 1974 as the Company’s
Head of Exploration. In 1977, the NNOC became the NNPC, and in 1978,
Ben Osuno was appointed the Corporation’s General Manager,
Exploration and Production. in 1979, he was redeployed to take charge
of the Petroleum Inspectorate as Head Petroleum Inspectorate, later
director Petroleum Resources, and later Director, Planning, Research
and Statistics in the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, until he
voluntarily retired in January, 1992. In May 1992, he was appointed
he Special adviser to the Minister of Petroleum Resources.
During his public service career, he had a number
of extra-curricular appointments, such as:
(a) Chairman, management Committees of the NNOC from
March 1976 to July, 1977.
(b) Chairman of the joint operating Committees of
the various Joint Venture Oil companies, from March 1976 to December
1978.
(c) Chairman of the Governing Council of the Petroleum
Training Institute, effurun near Warri, from January 1979 to April
1990.
(d) Chairman of the Petroleum Technology Development
Fund (PTDF). from January 1979 to April 1990.
(e) Nigeria’s Governor to OPEC, from January
1980 to January 1992.
(f) Chairman OPEC Board of Governors 1988.
(g) Nigeria’s Representative on the Permanent
council of the Corld Petroleum Congresses, from 1987 to January,
1992.
(h) Chairman National Committee of the World Petroleum
Congress for Nigeria, from 1990 to January, 1992.
In the 1980’s Ben Osuno served as the Financial
Secretary for the Lagos Branch of GCUOBA and has remained an executive
member of the Branch till date.
He is a Fellow of the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences
Society (FNMGS), Fellow of the Nigerian Association of Petroleum
Explorationist (FNAPE), and Patron/honorary Fellow of the Nigerian
Environmental Society.
Ben Osuno is married to Comfort Nkolika Osuno
(Nee Iweka), and they have five children and five grand children.
