At University
apart from academics, he was actively involved in photography and
won some prizes for excellent photographs taken by him. In sports
he had his colours in Lawn Tennis and in his final year was the
Captain of the University Lawn Tennis team. He graduated from the
University in 1963 with a BSc. 1st Class Honours Degree in Chemistry.
We were the last set to the University of London degree at Ibadan,
so our degrees were actually University of London Degrees.
He shocked his lecturers and professors at the university
by going to work for an Insurance company at Enugu on leaving the
University. He aslo did not take up an offer for a job from the
Shell Petroleum Refining Company in Port Harcourt. Late in December
1963 he left Nigeria for the United Kingdom and the following month
he regsitered as the first Nigerian student of the Institute of
Actuaries. While studying for the Institute of Actuaries examination,
he worked with different Actuarial comsulting firms and finally
with the pearl Assurance Company. He represented his company in
Lawn Tennis and played in the Insurance League. He obtained his
Associateship of the Institute of Actuaries in 1974 and later that
year was elected a fellow of The Royal Statistical Society.
In 1975 he decidedto come back to Nigeria after over
11 years sojourn in the United Kingdom. In May of that year he too
up appointment as assistant General Manager (Life) of the Unity
Life and Fire Insurance Company in Lagos. In 1978 he became General
Manager/Chief Executive of that company and in 1988 he resigned
from the company to set up Chike Oyeka and Company - a firm of Actarial
and Employee Benefits consultants. During this period he was an
Associate Lecturer in Actarial Science at the University of Lagos
(1976 to 1984) and also a visiting Lecurer to the West African College
of Insurance then in Monrovie, Liberia
In early 1989, he served in the Federal Government
Technical Committee on the Commercialization and Privatization of
the National Insurance Corporation of Nigeria (NICON) and Nigeria
Reinsurance Corporation (Nigeria Re). In july 1989, he was appointed
the first Executive Director (Special Risks) at the Nigeria Reinsurance
Corporation.
In 2003, his firm Chike Oyeka and Company merged with
another Nigerian Actuarial consulting firm - Ajibola Ogunshola and
company to form First Actuaries Nigeria Limited. This firm was then
taken over a year later by a South African Company - Alexander Forbes
Consulting Actuaries Nigeria Limited of which he is a Dierctor .
Since 2003, he was retired from active Actuarial practice.
He is currently a Director of Linkage Assurance Plc and Sovereign
Trust Insurance Plc. In 1991, he was knighted by the Anglican bishop
of the Niger Diocese as a knight of St. Christopher. For the past
41 years he has been married to Lady Oyeka and they have 3 children
and 6 grand children.
