First Class
Honours Degree (B. Eng.) in Mechanical Engineering in 1971, again
producing the best result in his class to win the Shell-BP Prize
for the “Most Outstanding Graduate in Mechanical Engineering
in 1971 at the same University.
He worked briefly at U.A.C. and proceeded to Cambridge
University on a Commonwealth Scholarship in 1974 and was admitted
into the same College as Sir Isaac Newton. He bagged a Doctorate
Degree PHD (Cantab) in 1977 before returning to Nigeria in 1978
to work for Shell Petroleum Development Company (S.P.D.C) and thereafter
for N.N.P.C where he worked for 24 years and retired in February
2004 after reaching the statutory retirement age of 60 years in
the rank of Ag. Group General Manager (Engineering).
He carried out research in Cambridge University where
he discovered a new Crack Propagation Law which enables one to predict
the Speed with which Cracks start to grow in metals before they
can be seen by the naked eyes and lead to catastrophic failure of
Engineering Components. He was involved in the management of the
first Atlas Cove Jetty project, Escravos to Warri Gas Pipeline feasibility
studies and the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Project on Bonny
Island, after 30 years of false starts.
He is married to Mrs. Obiageli R. Obianyor (Nee Okagbue
of Obosi) and they are blessed with four children - Alban, Antonio,
Osmond and Vivian, who are University graduates in various fields
of Engineering and Technology.
Obianyor was between 1980 and 1985, Assistant
Secretary and General Secretary of the Association in Lagos. He
supported financially, the Golden and Diamond Jubilee events of
the College and was one of the key organizers who participated in
the successful launch of the N500 Million Endowment Fund of the
College in 2006 in Abuja. Currently he is the Chairman/CEO of Jomega
Nigeria Ltd - an Engineering Services Provider and Consultants to
the petroleum industry.
