Laz
Edward Nwanyelu Ekwueme (HRH) was
born on January 28, 1936,at Oko,Orumba north local Government Area
of Anambra State, Nigeria. He attended Government College umuahia.
He later won numerous medals and in the eastern annually (1955-1957)
as prizes in the Eastern Nigerian Festival of arts especially in Music,
Drama and Literature. In 1960, he won a Nigerian
Federal Government scholarship which took him to the Royal College
of Music, London. He took a Bachelor of Music, (B Mus) Degree of
Music (M. Mus) of the Royal College of Music London in addition
to 12 professional teaching and performing diplomas in various branches
of music and in speech and drama. He played leading roles in the
African Theartre production of the African Service of the British
broadcasting corporation from 1960 to 1964.
He was a lecturer in Music at the University of Nigeria
Nsukka. In 1966, he went on an Aggrey fellowship to Yale University
in the United states of America from where he obtained a P.H.D.
in the Theory of music. He also taught at Yale. |

In 1974 he
founded the department of music at the University of Lagos and was
the principal actor in the establishment of the centre of cultural
studies. That year he founded the LAZ EKUWEME CHORALE. He was for
8 years the public orator of Unilag.
A multi-talented genius, professor Ekwueme, has put
Nigeria, indeed Africa, on the world map in the scholarship, creativity
and artistic performance of various branches of the arts, particularly
in the field of Music, Theatre, Literature and Communications. He
has written several books and has made a major mark into the budding
Nigerian Film Industry, playing leading roles in more than 15 Films
and Soap Operas.
Among others he was the trainer and director of National
Choir for FESTAC (1977), he is married to Dr. Lucy Ekwueme, associate
Professor, Unilag and has three children, two boys and one girl
all graduates.
Currently he is the traditional ruler of Oko,
Anambra State. It is our pleasure and honour to salute and present
His Royal Highness professor Ekweme IV, Eze Isiaka II Ozioko Igwe
Oko.
