GOVERNMENT COLLEGE UMUAHIA,
A TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE IN DECLINE

The History of this citadel of learning started in 1927 when the Colonial Government in Lagos decided to start 3 Secondary Schools “in the interior” namely a school in Ibadan (Government College Ibadan), one in Zaria (now Barewa College) and in Umuahia (Government College Umuahia). Read more...

 

MILESTONE IN UMUAHIA HISTORY

1927: Rev. Robert Fisher arrives Nigeria from Gold Coast (Ghana) and is posted by Colonial Govt in Lagos to start an institution in Eastern Nigeria.

1928: Rev. Fisher acquires the land for Govt College from Olokoro, Umudike and Lodu communities for one pound plus tobacco a year. They thought the white man was a fool to acquire a desecrated land used for buying Osu sect. Read more...


UMUAHIANS IN ATLANTA

The Atlanta chapter of the GCUOBA-USA, hosts of the sixth edition of the annual convention of the Government College, Umuahia Old Boys Association in the United States, promised a full dose of the “southern hospitality” to the old boys as they converged in Atlanta, this Olympic city famous as the “black capital” of the United States. I REMEMBER UMUAHIA

Those cold early mornings when I had to get up at 5.35am! I was lucky, all I had to do was go to the Assistant House captain’s room to clear the trash, sweep the room and what ever an assistant house capital’s fag did. I felt so sorry for my very young class mates - onyoos who had to do morning work, sweeping portions of allocated areas, and then gardening in the assigned portion.
